The Challenge

As part of the UK Government’s Faraday Batter Challenge: Industrial Strategy Fund, Miralis were tasked with undertaking research in to extending the long term life of electric vehicle batteries.

Who We Worked With

This project was completed in collaboration with Milliamp Technologies who undertook all hardware design and prototyping work, as well as the development of the Android mobile application

Our Work

This lead to our Smart Automotive Managed Battery Algorithm (SAMBA) project which focussed on developing a new smart battery management system for the EV charging infrastructure that was geared towards protecting and prolonging battery life. This was achieved by learning about the vehicle’s usage and the drivers needs and intelligently delivering only the amount of charged required.

In addition to improving long term battery life, cost savings are also realised by taking in to account flexible energy tariffs, charging the vehicle from the most cost effective source whilst optimally protecting the EV battery and, on a secondary level, the local storage battery.

This extends and significantly differs from the current process of smart charging where profiles are based on charging cost and upper restrictions of site infrastructure alone and do not consider battery health or vehicle usage.

Prototype hardware was built to demonstrate the real-world applications of the solution but the software was built around the idea of retrofitting to or integrating with any smart EV charger

Next Steps

Technology developed in this project will provide the technical underpinning for the smart charging functionality in our upcoming ChargeBetter Chargepoint Management platform, allowing both individual vehicles and fleets to receive optimised charging based on their usage and the operators requirements.

We are also looking for EV charge point manufactures to partner with to look at further develop this technology with a view to integrating it in to existing  commercial hardware.

In addition to electric vehicles, technology developed under this project has far wider applications in understanding how energy can be used and distributed, from “inside-the-breaker” solutions for domestic, commercial and industrial applications, to directing national and local grid supply.
